How weather-resistant is composite fencing?

What is composite fencing?

Before looking at weather resistance, it helps to understand what composite fencing actually is. Composite fencing is made using a combination of wood fibres and plastic polymers. How does composite fencing cope with rain?

Rain is hardly an occasional visitor in the UK, so moisture resistance is one of the biggest considerations when choosing outdoor fencing. It becomes particularly important through autumn and winter, when periods of persistent rain and slower drying can leave outdoor surfaces exposed to moisture for much longer.

Timber naturally absorbs and releases moisture, and repeated wetting and drying can cause it to swell, shrink and change shape. Over time, this can contribute to issues like warping, splitting and surface deterioration. Damp conditions can also create a more favourable environment for mould and fungal decay, particularly where timber stays wet and doesn’t have the chance to dry properly.

That’s where composite really comes into its own. Designed to resist moisture, composite fencing won’t rot or warp like traditional timber when exposed to wet weather, retaining its shape and appearance through even the harshest conditions. 

What happens to composite fencing when temperatures drop?

When winter temperatures fall, your fence is right on the front line. Frost and freezing conditions can be particularly tough on timber, especially where small cracks or imperfections have already developed. Repeated freezing and thawing can put additional stress on the wood, potentially making existing cracks, splits or other damage worse over time. In comparison, that’s not a concern with composite. Our composite boards contain UV-stabilising additives that help protect against fading, so the colour is designed to remain more consistent as the boards are exposed to sunlight. For example, our slatted fence boards are designed to fade by no more than 1.5% per year, with no visible colour change expected for the first five years. That protection is built into the boards themselves, rather than relying on you to apply a separate treatment to guard against sunlight.
