Man cleaning composite decking

How to clean your composite decking step by step

So you’ve opted for composite decking – now what? Rest assured, you’ve made a worthwhile investment. It doesn’t get more low-maintenance than composite decking. There’s no need to worry about woodworm, no need for annual treating – from the moment it’s installed, you’re ready to go. All you need to focus on is keeping it looking great, and we’re here to help.

Step 1. Clear the deck

First, clear the decking completely of furniture, rugs, or pots so you have the space needed for a deep clean. Don’t worry – it won’t be long before you can put back all those additions that make your outdoor space stylish and cosy! It’s a good opportunity to give everything a once-over, not just your deck. Maybe you’ve been putting off replacing that chair or planting new flowers. Now’s your chance! When the job’s done, you can put it all together and really transform your space.

Step 2. Sweep and rinse

Next, sweep away debris. It’s a good idea to make this a regular habit, especially in autumn. Composite is highly rot-resistant, but if left too long, fallen leaves can cause issues like mould and staining. Keeping on top of cleaning stops dirt from building up and makes your deep cleaning easier. To get rid of debris and dirt the sweeping brush missed, rinse off thoroughly with either warm water or a hose.

If you find yourself reaching for the jet washer here, think before you spray. Though they’re a quick way of soaking the deck, the high pressure risks splintering the boards. Guidance varies, with many sources recommending you keep the washer at or below 3100 PSI, holding the nozzle around 20 to 40 cm above the decking. A fan attachment is also suggested to create a gentler spray. Ultimately, though, you really don’t want to damage your lovely composite decking. To find out if a jet washer is safe to use, check with your manufacturer, or play it safe and stick with the brush.

Step 3. Get scrubbing – but be mindful!

Firstly, make sure you have the right brush! Remember: composite decking is highly durable, but can still be scratched. We recommend using a brush with soft bristles, perfect for cleaning delicate surfaces without being too rough.

Next, choose your cleaner. A mixture of warm water and a mild detergent like washing-up liquid is a good option. For dirtier decks, tougher stains or mould, it’s worth trying white vinegar or even a specialist composite cleaner from your local DIY shop. Just make sure the cleaner is suitable for your specific decking. You might be tempted to use bleach out of habit, but don’t –  it can actually cause damage and discoloration.

Once you’ve picked your brush and your solution, start scrubbing! Make sure you cover the entire decking to avoid patches. Having a smaller brush or even a sponge on hand will also help to tackle awkward corners and gaps – just make sure not to use the scouring side! Again, a jet wash can be used to help clean stubborn stains and grime, but keep paying attention to pressure and distance.

Step 4. Rinse and dry

Finally, rinse off your deck and once dried, return your furniture and accessories to recreate your cosy outdoor space.

It’s a good idea to clean your decking every couple of months, but all gardens are different. If your deck is near trees or is more frequently used, you may choose to clean it more often. After all, it’s not just about keeping your space looking stylish. Something as minor as mould can also cause more serious long-term damage, so it’s best to scrub it away when you find it.
