Composite Gate Boards

Yes! Both our slatted and woodgrain gate boards are DIY friendly, with lightweight designs and tongue-and-groove fittings to make installation straightforward and convenient. They’re also easy to cut with a regular handsaw or circular saw, allowing you to tailor each board neatly to size so you can achieve a clean, accurate finish and the perfect fit for your gate project.

Our composite gate boards are designed to perform well in all seasons, offering reliable resistance to moisture, rot and insect activity. With traditional timber, it’s common to worry about issues like fading, mould, decay and general weather damage over time – but with composite gate boards, those concerns are taken out of the equation. It’s an incredibly dependable option for outdoor use, giving you a gate that stays looking consistent and well-maintained without the same level of ongoing upkeep or worry.

Unlike many alternatives on the market, both our slatted and woodgrain composite gate boards are double-sided. This means that once they’re installed, their appearance remains consistent and well-finished from every angle, so your gate looks just as good from the outside as it does from the inside.

Our composite gate boards are typically fitted within a pre-fabricated frame, where they’re secured in place between the frame sections. This creates a solid, enclosed build that helps achieve a neat, professional-looking finish while keeping the boards firmly supported on both sides.

Alternatively, if you don’t like the idea of the visible frame, you can also attach them using coach bolts. If you choose this option, it’s important to drill clean, accurate pilot holes beforehand to help prevent any risk of splitting the material. Fixings should also be tightened carefully, firm enough to secure the boards properly, but not over-tightened, as excessive pressure can mark the surface.

Though composite gate boards experience very little movement, we still recommend leaving a small expansion gap of around 8–9mm around the edges. This accommodates any minor natural expansion and keeps the finished gate looking neat and well-aligned over time.

If you’re fitting the boards vertically, it’s also good practice to use spacers at the base of the gate frame. This lifts the boards slightly off the bottom rail, preventing them from sitting in any water that may collect over time. It’s a simple step that helps support long-term performance and keeps the installation in better condition for even longer.

Cleaning composite gate boards is straightforward and doesn’t require any specialist products. In most cases, a simple wash using warm water with a mild household detergent and a soft brush is enough to remove everyday dirt and keep the surface looking tidy. For more stubborn build-up or for a deeper clean, a standard domestic jet washer can also be used, helping to refresh the boards quickly without affecting their finish when used at a sensible pressure.
